Local leaders criticized the Adams administration for insufficient preparations and poor handling of Friday’s historic storm. Widespread flooding once again brought to the forefront efforts to legalize basement apartments.
The first wave of evictions was handed to migrants on Wednesday, stemming from a new City policy aimed at limiting the amount of time migrants without children can spend in shelters. The evictions continued throughout the morning on Friday, forcing some migrants to leave even amidst a torrential downpour.
The Adams administration has given landlords a two-year delay to implement the new climate rules first passed in 2019.
A Manhattan judge blocked attempts by delivery apps to resist paying delivery drivers a minimum wage.
Inmates at Rikers have suffered as a result of funding cuts implemented in the Mayor’s budget this past summer. After slashing $17M in funding towards inmate programming, including therapy and housing counseling, the Mayor said the Department of Corrections would provide those services itself, but those programs have instead abruptly ended.
New restrictions on visitors to Rikers Island, first implemented during the pandemic, are leading to the collapse of the Rikers Debate Program, as well as other programs that rely on volunteers.
Andrew Cuomo's legal team is using a lawsuit by one of the ex-Governor's accusers to subpoena years of records from multiple women who cooperated with the Attorney General's 2021 report, which concluded that Cuomo had harassed nearly a dozen women, leading to his eventual resignation.
