Mayor Eric Adams announced that he will reverse previously announced budget cuts to the NYPD and FDNY. He did not mention any reversal of cuts to libraries, schools, or parks. Adams is set to unveil his 2025 budget plan on Tuesday.
In 2023, the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) received the highest number of complaints of NYPD misconduct since 2012. The Police Commissioner followed CCRB recommendations in 55% of cases last year, down from 71% in 2021.
City Comptroller Brad Lander announced an investigation into Mayor Adams’s policy of limiting migrant families with children to 60 days in shelters.
Nine people were arrested for blocking construction crews from filling an illegally constructed tunnel underneath the global headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in Crown Heights.
In an oversight hearing last week, Rikers Island detainees complained of continued dismal conditions at the facility, including lack of access to basic items such as mattresses and clean linens.

State Assembly campaigns for DSA-endorsed candidates Claire Valdez (District 37, Sunnyside), Eon Huntley (District 56, Bedford-Stuyvesant), and Jonathan Soto (District 82, Pelham Bay) were mentioned in City & State’s 2024 State Legislature races to watch.
