A judge dismissed a manslaughter charge against Daniel Penny, who had been accused of killing Jordan Neely, after the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision. The jury is now considering a lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide. Neely’s father filed a lawsuit accusing Penny of assault.
The targeted killing of the UnitedHealthcare chief executive in Manhattan set off a wave of online criticism directed at the healthcare industry, with one analyst saying the event was being framed in online discourse as “the opening blow in a broader class war.” A lookalike contest for the gunman was held in Washington Square Park over the weekend.

United Auto Workers Region 9A endorsed Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani (District 36, Astoria), City Comptroller Brad Lander, and State Senator Jessica Ramos (District 13, Elmhurst) for mayor as part of an unranked slate, and also told members not to rank incumbent mayor Eric Adams.
Mayoral candidate and State Senator Zellnor Myrie (District 20, Crown Heights) unveiled a plan to build or preserve up to a million homes over ten years.
Mayoral candidates Jessica Ramos (State Senate District 13, Elmhurst) and Michael Blake joined Zohran Mamdani (Assembly District 36, Astoria) in calling for a rent freeze for rent-stabilized tenants. All other mayoral candidates refused to directly endorse such an initiative.
State Senator and former Independent Democratic Conference member Simcha Felder (District 20, Borough Park, Midwood) has filed to run in the upcoming New York City Council special election to fill the seat being vacated by Kalman Yeger (District 44, Borough Park), who will join the NY State Assembly as of January 1.
